| Issued 1st July 1853. The printing house in charge of this issue was Perkin, Bacon & Co. They printed this issue in the same colours and on similar paper to then current British 1d and 2d values. The same blueing of the paper occurs, mainly in the 5c value. | |

Desmadryl house was a Santiago printer. From January 1854 to February 1855, they printed 5c stamps from the Perkin plates. Below: from Hamilton collection a cover from Coquimbo to Valparaiso with a 5c pale reddish brown. |

The plates of these stamps were handed to the litographer of Santiago H.C.Gillet, who made recess printing of the 5c value from July 1854 in two different shades: |

The Chilian Government ordered in January 1854 a second printing to London. These stamps were printed for Perkins, Bacon & Co. and they show the blueing of the paper. The watermark of this printing was a larger double lined "5" which is the major distinguishing feature of this issue. |

About May 1856 a special Department for the printing of postage stamps ordered the purchase of presses for this purpose. They were set up in a room at the General Post Office, in Santiago. Left: Cover with 5c orange-brown plate II. The impressions show little or no shading about the head. |

SANTIAGO POST OFFICE PRINTING (1857-1862). |

From mid 1858 to early 1862, the 5c value appeared in shades of red and rose-red, darker reds appeared in the later printings when a new consignment of ink from Britain was put into use. Below: a three block with shades of rose-red.
